Chief town of the Guelmim oued noun region, limited to the north by the province of Sidi Ifni, to the south-east by the province of Assa-Zag, to the south-west by the province of Tan-Tan, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean and to the east by the province of Tata. Literally, its name means in the Amazigh language “wet space”, due to the existence of several water points which have made it a popular place for local populations who had pastoralism as their way of life.
It is considered the capital of the Tekna, a tribal confederation living along the Oued Noun and known, historically, under the name of the country of the Lamta to which were added from the 13ᵉ century other tribes, the Bani Maakal for the essential.
