Two air links between Guelmim and the Canary Islands and Laâyoune on track

Royal Air Maroc will launch on June 12 a new line resulting from a partnership agreement with the regional council of Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra which will connect Guelmim and Laâyoune with two weekly flights on Wednesdays and Fridays for 360 DH one way. It will be added to the Guelmim-Casablanca line provided by the same company. In addition, another air link between the Guelmim-Oued Noun region and the Canary Islands will see the light of day in the coming months. The agreement relating to this line will be the subject of the next session of the provincial council of Guelmim scheduled for June 10 and which will have to validate a partnership agreement with a low cost company. These two lines are part of the desire to offer the region new air links that strengthen its attractiveness at the global level. They will have to participate in opening up this region, promote international tourism with the whole panoply of services from this Saharan hub, which will now be able to take advantage of its proximity to the Canary Islands.

Recall that Guelmim airport has a new terminal, the commissioning of which was launched last January by HM King Mohammed VI and which is part of the strategy of the National Airports Office (ONDA) aimed at increasing the reception capacities of regional airports, specifying that the new terminal has an annual capacity of 700,000 passengers.

Mobilizing investments of around 273.5 million dirhams, the project focused on extending and upgrading the aircraft movement area to accommodate type B 747 aircraft, strengthening the take-off runway and the construction of its shoulders, the construction of an aircraft parking area to accommodate 4 medium-haul aircraft, and the creation of connecting ramps between the runway and the new aircraft parking area.

It also consisted of the construction of a new terminal over an area of 7,000 m2, as well as the erection of various buildings over an area of 2,000 m2 (technical block, administrative buildings, rescue service and combat aircraft fire). It also involves the development of a car park, with a capacity of 290 places, the access road to the airport, in addition to the construction of a structure to cross the Oued Oum El Achar. The new terminal is equipped with modern technological equipment that meets international norms and standards and allows passengers to be welcomed in the best conditions of reception, safety and comfort.
